Graeme left England in 1996 to go 'backpacking' and came back a worldly, wise, interesting, charming, adventurous sailor!! Since he had always had a love for sailing - his backpacking soon took the rough 'overland' route towards the sea - and easily found 'crewing' on private yachts an easier, more enjoyable way to see the world.  Two years and several thousand sea miles later he landed in South Africa (from Australia) and decided this was the life for him.

Meanwhile - Julie, his best friend for 15 years, was succeeding in becoming a devoted middle-class executive with all the trappings included (husband, Mercedes car, big house/salary/expenses).

It did not take that much convincing that leaving those trappings and sailing around the world was a good idea - and six months later - casting off all those beourgois ideals - flew to South Africa in search of our new home!

We left England in Sept '98. By November '98 we had secured our new home - Khulula. Graeme already knew some of her history, she was a strong, solid (but slow) cruiser, plenty of room, built in Australia to a Dutch design (original design built for rescue boats) and needed some love and adventure.  We re-launched her 6 months later with her new name - Khulula - fitting we thought for where we found her, Zululand.  There is no direct translation, but it roughly translates as - 'To be set free' - both her and us!!!

The reason we chose South Africa to buy was the price - there are many boats there, waiting for new homes and, sadly, the Rand makes this a very attractive place for any other currency.

Nearly 3 years later, she has given us so much joy.  Now, we are shortly to return to her original place for some serious maintenance - which means re-tracing her steps from our present location, Phuket, Thailand back to Maldives (Gan), Chagos (that wonderful place), Seychelles (Coetivy), Kenya (Mtwapa, Kilifi, Lamu), Tanzania (Zanzibar, Pemba, Tanga), Madagascar and Richard's Bay.

Then, we will start going around the world - the right way!!!!!

For more information on these legs - keep checking our page as I update it from our logs.
